Alonso has had his thumbs insured for £9,000,000

A spokesperson for the Spaniard said: ”Alonso’s thumbs are a big symbol as, apart from being essential when driving a Formula One car, they represent a sign of victory and that everything is under control and well protected.”

The coverage is part of a life and accident package arranged by banking giant Santander, supporter of Scuderia Ferrari. Alonso has freshly agreed a new one-year contract with the bank, meaning he is now sponsored by both the insurance and banking divisions of the company, which also sponsor the McLaren F1 team and the British GP.
