Veteran F1 commentator Murray Walker fight with cancer


Veteran Formula One commentator Murray Walker said he was optimistic of making a full recovery after being diagnosed with lymphatic system cancer aged 89. "They've caught it incredibly early," Walker said. "It's treatable. The doctors say my condition is mild and I'm very hopeful."

Walker has been the voice of motor racing, on both BBC and ITV, for over 30 years.

He is much loved for his unique presenting style, unlikely double act with fast-living former driver James Hunt, who died in 1993, and his frequent gaffes.

"Unless I'm very mistaken... and yes, I am very much mistaken," remains his catchphrase.

F1 Racing took to Twitter to praise Walker's professionalism.

"Anyone who knows Murray Walker will not be at all surprised to learn that in an email telling us he might be forced to miss a column or two his major concern was that F1 Racing should find a 'Plan B' in case chemotherapy prevented him from filing copy!" the magazine wrote.

"Mention of his cancer diagnosis almost an afterthought."
