Karun Chandhok was unsurprisingly irritated at the Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve on Saturday as he qualified 24th and last for the Canadian Grand Prix. After being forced to modify his gearbox, the Indian was handed a 5-place grid drop penalty prior to the grid-deciding session. There was frustration all round in the car #20 garage as Chandhok reached only the end of the pit lane in final practice before having to be retrieved by mechanics.The ensuing penalty meant the car sat in the pits at the end of qualifying; saving tyres with the information’s that no more than a back-of-the-grid place would be attained once all other drivers had posted lap times.
"It was very frustrating today as we missed the third practice and also qualifying," Karun explained. "We have to look into the problems and understand what went wrong. After two good sessions yesterday, it's even more frustrating as this weekend we really could have competed against the other new teams in qualifying. "It will be a tricky race tomorrow with the tyre wear and high probability of Safety Cars. So, let's see what we can do tomorrow."
Team-mate Bruno Senna also struggled for grip but still managed to split the Virgin Racing cars and qualify 22nd. "Unfortunately, there was rain last night and the track got green again in the morning," the Brazilian said. "Thankfully, I was able to do a clear lap."
