Lewis Hamilton: not easy to close gap immediately.

Lewis Hamilton was happy to meet his aim of finishing on the Bahrain GP podium as the season began on Sunday. The McLaren ace was yet to finish in the top three at Sakhir since doing so in his entrance season three years ago but admits that the Working outfit is not yet close sufficient to the front runners. Subsequent Sebastian Vettel's thrashing of the lead due to a broken exhaust; it was a Ferrari expression in Bahrain as Hamilton also overtake the limping German.

Third place was a very powerful result for us today, said Stevenage driver Hamilton. I sense that we did a good job; our consistency was great and the pace today was attractive good but we still need to push very hard to close the gap to the cars in front.

Irritated by a first-lap mistake at Turn 4 which permissible Nico Rosberg's Mercedes through, Hamilton later struggled from vibrations caused by a flat-spotted tyre and admits that reducing the shortfall will take time. It's going to be hard for us to close the performance gap quickly but I think I'll go back to the factory and give them the big push, he said. I know they're all pushing flat-out as it is, but we need to get some upgrades, and we need to bring as many of them ahead as we maybe can.
